Takeaways from MOps-Apalooza 2023 (+ My Slides)

The MOps-Apalooza 2023 conference was an amazing (and exhausting) few days in Anaheim full of great sessions and networking. I knew a lot of the many talented nerds already from the community, but it was awesome translating those online relationships into real-life ones.  I highly encourage you to attend next year.

Biggest Takeaways

There were three things I kept thinking about throughout the conference:

Tie your work back to business outcomes

Everyone who attended Jessica Kao and David Alexander‘s session Translating Geek Speak to CMO Speak agreed that it was fantastic and couldn’t STFU about it (myself included).

We often find ourselves getting bogged down in the nerdy details (that are still cool!), but the rest of the business cares about how it will help them and how it will drive more pipeline, bookings and revenue. “I care, but I don’t.” I think this is a lesson we all know, but often forget, and I will definitely be repeating this mantra to myself in the future.

Data is only useful if it helps us make decisions

This one really speaks to me when we talk about attribution. This is all kinda sorta arbitrary, but the point isn’t to argue about credit, but rather to get a sense of what’s performing.

There are many different ways of looking at data, most of which are valuable.  But at the end of the day, we’re just trying to make better decisions. Especially when budgets are tight like they are now, it’s our job to interpret the data and pick out the “Insight Cupcakes” (s/o to Carey Picklesimer) that tell us what’s working, what isn’t, and what behaviors will drive better outcomes. (See what I did there?)

We all benefit from knowledge sharing

Holy hell is there a TON of talent in this space. And the breadth of the Marketing Operations skillset is HUGE. There’s always more we can learn, and there are plenty of pros out there will share how they did it, what they learned, and help you get there, too.  I hope you find me on LinkedIn or Slack, and if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask.
